To do this, we organized creative workshops where participants, working in small groups of five or six, were invited to draw a \u201cfully eco-competent creature.\u201d They then described, in their own words, the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that made this creature eco-competent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eco-competences identified through this process reflect a practitioner\u2019s perspective, drawing on the insights of educators, teachers, activists, community leaders, youth workers, and other change agents. Through this work, we identified eight additional competences that complement the <\/span>GreenComp<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> framework and complete the range of competences needed to achieve sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper. It reminds us that humans are part of nature, and that justice and fairness must guide choices for both current and future generations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainability challenges are complex because they connect nature, society, politics, technology, and economics. Our values and perspectives always shape how we see these problems \u2014 facts alone are not enough. Knowledge tells us how things are, but values guide us toward how things should be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competences like systems thinking or futures literacy only become truly useful when they are linked to strong sustainability values, otherwise they could even support unsustainable paths. Learning for sustainability is most powerful when it is transformative \u2014 engaging the head, hands, and heart.
